Chiropractic care for low back pain relief

Lower back pain, or lumbar pain, is a common condition

It is thought to affect 80% of adults at some point during their lives. There are lots of different reasons why this might be the case including poor posture, lifestyle choices, muscle strain, injury, or irritation of the lumbar nerves which control signals to the lower abdomen, buttocks and legs.

In many cases the pain will go away by itself after a week or two but if this doesn’t happen then you may find you need to consider treatment options. You could consider conventional medicines – pain killers and anti-inflammatories, or you may prefer physiotherapy or a visit to a Chiropractor. At Ivybridge Chiropractic Clinic I will guarantee you a warm, friendly welcome and a personalised service that ensures you feel safe, valued and cared for throughout your treatment.

Pain killers and anti-inflammatories are often the first port of call for those suffering with lower back pain. Maybe you’ve tried this already? If so, you’ll already know that in the short term it can work really well – but longer term you may realise that you’re masking the symptoms rather than treating the cause of the problem. It’s really important to remember that pain is a warning sign; your body is telling you that something is wrong and you should trust yourself and seek advice.

Acute lower back pain is a sudden onset severe pain most commonly associated with an injury or trauma. Acute pain responds exceptionally well to chiropractic care and you could be on your way to being pain free in just a few short visits! Chronic lower back pain is an ongoing pain, aching or stiffness that may be caused by an underlying condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, sciatica or disc degeneration. These may not be so easily ‘cured’ but I can help to reduce your pain and increase your mobility through regular treatments tailored to meet your individual needs.

Whatever the cause of your lower back pain, when you come to Ivybridge Chiropractic Clinic I will work with you on a diagnosis and individual treatment plan. The treatment itself is a gentle and non-invasive hands on manipulation of the spine to realign the bones; making them straighter to give your body an opportunity to heal itself and relax your muscles into a more natural and comfortable posture. This manual therapy isn’t painful (I’ll even make sure my hands aren’t too cold!) and chiropractic has been proven time and time again to be the safest and most effective alternative treatment for pain relief.

What to expect….

Our first session will last between 30 and 60 minutes. I’ll need to assess your mobility at the time of the appointment, talk through the problems you’ve been having and look at other factors such as your medical history, lifestyle, sleep patterns and stress. This is a holistic therapy; looking at the whole person rather than just the immediate cause of pain. I like to take the time to get to know my patients and may be able to give you some good advice on making subtle, beneficial lifestyle changes as well as always promising you first class treatment and a chance to relax and de-stress.
